a river in the eastern US. It begins in the ↑Appalachian Mountains in ↑West Virginia and flows 285 miles/459 kilometres past ↑Harpers Ferry, ↑Mount Vernon and Washington, DC, into Chesapeake Bay on the Atlantic coast.
